Counseling
Kokanee Elementary School Counseling:
Hi Kokanee families! I'm Sophie Happold (formerly Nelson), Kokanee's School Counselor. This will be my 5th year at Kokanee. I am excited to continue to work with all of our students and have another great year!
I am here to support our entire Kokanee community.
I work alongside teachers, parents, and guardians to help all of our Kodiaks develop socially, emotionally, and academically. I provide classroom guidance lessons, small groups, individual counseling, and resources for families.
Classroom Guidance Lessons
All students receive classroom guidance lessons. Second Step Bullying Prevention will be taught in all 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade classes. Kelso's Choice will be taught in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. Other social-emotional lessons may also be taught based off of specific classroom needs.
Kelso's Choice :
Kelso's Choice Conflict Management is a curriculum designed to give students specific tools to help them solve problems.
Second Step:
Second Step focuses on important skills that students need, such as skills for learning, empathy, emotional management, and problem-solving.
Small Groups
Your student may be invited to participate in group counseling. Groups are offered throughout the year and focus on various topics such as friendship, self-regulation, anxiety, anger management, grief and loss, and also family transitions.
Individual Counseling
Individual short-term, solution-focused counseling is provided as needed. Students can self-refer, guardians can refer, or any school staff can refer a student to me. For ongoing, long-term issues, I can provide outside counseling referrals to local services.
Resources
I can also help with such things as food, clothing, basic needs, and community mental health support. Please don't hesitate to reach out if your family is experiencing a crisis of any kind.
